"Good TV", in collaboration with Vision Forum and the people of Wu Dao Ying Hu Tong in Beijing welcomes you to an art exhibition based on storytelling performed live.

"This image is no more"

The exhibition "This image is no more" has been conceived in collaboration between a group of Swedish artists and members of the Chinese community. The project looks for new forms of making and perceiving art, where the art as object has been replaced by the relations and processes surrounding it.

People who live and work in the Wu Dao Ying Hu Tong have been engaged to tell stories of images drawn from memories, dreams or visions. Meaning that the exhibition consists of images only materialized in the act of storytelling. The public will find these storytellers in their everyday settings at home or at work. On request each person/storyteller performs a monologue describing their specific image.

Welcome to opening reception will take place at "illy coffee/Cafe Confucius" on Thursday the 1st of July at 19.00 - 21.00 pm.

Natasha Rosling - Performative Sculpture 1 (The Loft)

Natasha Rosling created a specially designed dress that she had lifted over her head with the help of an ingenious structure, displaying her naked, brightly red-coloured legs. She remained immobile in this position on a small stool for 90 minutes, drawing a lot of interest from the local community and stimulating their humour and creativity.

Working with four young local actors, Per Hüttner’s two performances both used the idea of confident men at the peak of their virility receiving a phone call from an older version of themselves, with the intention to give useful advice that appear to be ignored due to youthful over-confidence. In the first, the four bumped into one-another in the heat of Friday evening, but as the strangeness of the call became evident their enthusiasm quickly wore off and sparked introspection. What could have been a fun night out, fizzled out. The event was repeated seven times, every 15 minutes copying the logic of the déjà-vu.

Jon Phillips and Matt Hope have developed a series of specially designed sound systems that are open source and that allow sound artists to create cheap and effective ways to play and present their work. They speakers were used in a DJ-set where the heavy beats of hip-hop got entangled with a whole array of national anthems.

The artist has created a special box that was mounted on a traditional Chinese Tricycle, used for transporting material in the city. The box contained a hidden camera that was connected to a TV-monitor. The audience followed the bored expressions of the artist in his box and even though the cables between the two were clearly visible the audience expressed marvel and excitement when he finally exited from the box..

Hu Xiangqian – No Sound Peformance (The Loft)

Hu Xiangqian is interested in taking the idea of musical sampling and staging it in other genres. For the performance in Shenzhen he asked four artists to act as a music group and to perform a playback without sound. The outcome was a very strange pantomime that built up to a massive crescendo where the performers gave everything, as if it was a climax of a grand arena concert. An unexpected benefit was that the video that documents the project has every documentary quality of a concert video apart from the missing sound.

Yang Zhifei – Dream workshops (OCAT Book Bar)

Amsterdam-based artist Yang Zhifei realized a series of workshops that are open to the public and that investigate the similarities and individuality of dreams. She recorded the voices of Dutch people describing dreams that they have had and that they felt remain important to them. She played them back on a black screen, only displaying the Chinese translation of the dreams. The workshop participants were then asked to make a drawing representing the dream. Another Chinese person then reinterpreted each drawing as a dream. In the final presentation the audience was faced with three different versions of the same dream.

Per Hüttner’s performance engaged four young local actors of similar height and appearance. They were dressed in identical clothes and carried a plant. When they entered the train, they received a phone call from an older version of themselves, but the connection was bad. So each of them had to get off. According to an intricate system the four men moved in and out of the underground trains, so that the people on the train saw the exact same actions and conversations repeated four times by four people

One of the things that Bulgaria and China have in common is the fact that people cross the street anywhere and at any time. Having produced a video about this fact, Belchev produced his own rolled up Zebra crossing which was unrolled and that allowed its user and fellow pedestrians to cross the street anywhere and at any time.

Dinu Li will presentED a Flash mob-like action on the Shenzhen Underground. He worked with a group of workers from a nearby village in Guangdong. They appeared to be complete strangers and at a given moment they accused each other very loudly. The performance was totally unannounced.

Yang Zhifei (with participation of the other artists) – Pillow

Yang ZhiFei decided to show her oversized pillow which had previously been presented in Beijing. She also bought normal sized pillows for the other artists to join. In the warm and calm a dozen artists were dozing together outside the high-tech shopping mall causing the locals to pry with great interest in spite of the old Chinese habit to sleep in unexpected and amazing situations.

Jon Phillips and Per Hüttner (with the participation of other participating artists and local artists)– Urban soccer

Following the success of the Urban Soccer project in Melbourne, Phillips and Hüttner invited everyone to join the football game on the streets, plazas and shopping centres in the city of Shenzhen.

The Invisible Generation in Beijing and Shenzhen

The Invisible Generation is a collection of artistic interventions that spread virally across the continents of our globe. It uses the artistic and curatorial network of Vision Forum as a platform to multiply and make its way into the perception of people in public spaces of selected cities around the world. The project takes its starting point in performative traditions, but focuses on practices and events that cross over into other time-based activities as sound, film, video, literature, theatre, workshops and draws inspiration from other genres such as journalism, fashion, design and further afield from mathematics and physics.
The Invisible Generation started spreading from a base at the VCA Gallery in Melbourne in September 2009 and now the virus has arrived in Beijing and Shenzhen. Here it can be found in sonic material slipped into the desk drawers of a newspaper office (Yan Jun); carnivalesque costumes appearing in public space as temporary and wearable architectures (Natasha Rosling); a collection of lost images retold by storytellers in their everyday life (Good TV); a giant white pillow carried through the streets the Chinese capital to mirror its grandiose buildings (Yang Zhifei); re-enacted déjà vus intruding into the daily routine of subway passengers (Per Hüttner); unannounced public choreography of corruption and guilt (Dinu Li), portable zebra crossings to facilitate jaywalking (Neno Belchev) and temporary appropriation of institutions' unused spaces (Josefin Wikström and Sarah Kim). Together the interventions of The Invisible Generation in China form a multifaceted virus that infects temporality and colonizes social spaces to revitalize the very fabric of reality.

The Invisible Generation spread from OCAT (http://www.ocat.com.cn) in Shenzhen October 23-25 and will linger in various locations in Beijing throughout winter and until spring 2010.

The following projects will be carried out within the boundaries of The Invisible Generation Shenzhen:

1. Hu Xiangqian – The Movement is the Music (Working title)

Hu Xiangqian is engaged in a research where he investigates music as a source for movement rather than sound. He will carry out a performance where either non-musicians play with professional musicians or where professional musicians do movements with their instruments.

2. Natasha Rosling - Performative Sculptures - various public spaces in Beijing.

Natasha Rosling has since the beginning of her career created structures that break the boundaries of clothing, sculpture and performance. For Shenzhen, she will produce a series of interactive sculptures that she will mount and wear in a series of public spaces.

3. Yang Zhifei – Dream workshops

Amsterdam-based artist Yang Zhifei will realise a series of workshops that are open to the public and that investigate the similarities and individuality of dreams. She has been researching the nature of human dreams as a part of her artistic practice for many years.

4. Jon Phillips and Matt Hope .

Jon Phillips and Matt Hope have developed a series of specially designed sound systems that are open source and that allow sound artists to create cheap and effective ways to play and present their work. They will use the speakers to create an interactive setting where everyone can play-back and interact with their own sounds.

5. Per Hüttner Calabi-Yau-Presents

Per Hüttner will perform a series of interventions in the Shenzhen cityscape. Drawing inspiration from ideas of parallel and alternative realities he mounts texts that appear to be both scientific and official, but on closer inspection are turn out to flirt with the absurdities of everyday existence.

6. Neno Belchev – suitcase across the border to HK.
(He has explained this work to you. I believe)

For different reasons, outcast from their native born places, a lot of people take long and dangerous journeys with the purpose to find better place for living. Many of them die during the way, traveling in suitcases, luggage-carrier and containers. Neno makes this research, to realize to which point some people are ready to go to immigrate in other country. What is the value of the emigration? And what is the value of the “good” life? The author desires (needs) to identify himself with them and to make the spectators put themselves in the place of the immigrants and to feel their suffering.

7. DICA - Yam Lau and Michael Yuen

DICA will present a series of works by Chen Xinpeng, Neville Mars, Yam Lau, Jean-François Côté, Ma Yong Feng, Li Zeng Hui and Yi Shen. The work is presented with the aid of a donkeythus drawing attention to how the presentation of work can have a performative aspect.

8. Josefin Wikström – Deep Inside and artist TBA.

Curator Josefin Wikström is developing a project within Invisible Generation where she invites artists to make work in non-traditional spaces in art institutions: toilets, hallways, offices etc.

9. Dinu Li.

Dinu Li proposes a series of Flash mob-like actions in a supermarket, shopping amll or similar, where groups of people interact according to rules of the game, but act as if they are complete strangers.

News For Tomorrow is a commissioned piece by Beijing-based artist Yan Jun for
the Birdcage itinerant sound gallery. The artist picked one of the desks in the editorial office of Beijing Youth Weekly and placed recording devices, mp3 players and cassette walkman in it. The devices either reproduce the interview recordings of the magazine’s editorial staff, or record the soundscape of the office, which will be simultaneously played and processed in real time through headphones while creating feedback noise.

The staff and writers of Beijing Youth Weekly, the people who go to the magazine’s office for business purposes, and the friends and relatives of the above mentioned are the only people allowed to experience the piece, using the headphones displaced in the office.

After Stockholm with Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Amsterdam with dj sniff,
Yan Jun's News For Tomorrow introduces the third Birdcage episode. The piece is also part of “The Invisible Generation” programme of art interventions in the cities of Melbourne, Beijing, Shenzhen and Kiev and will be exhibited, as a replica, at Blank / Beijing Zhongjian Gallery from the 24th of October 2009.

Yan Jun (born in Lanzhou in 1973, now based in Beijing) explores the realm of sound and language using different tools as feedback noise, drone sound, voice, field recording, site-specific sound installation, impro music, environmental sound, writing, publishing and curating. He's the founder of Sub Jam and of its sub-label Kwan Yin Records. He runs a weekly event in Beijing called Waterland Kwanyin and organizes the annual festival Mini Midi since 2005.He has published 5 essay collections about Chinese new music and 3 poetry collections.
